About Us

Dr. Fred Wolfe and Dr. Donna Winn brought the specialty of rheumatology to East Tennessee in 1979 when they left academic rheumatology positions at the University of Missouri to form Rheumatology Consultants, PLLC. At the time, virtually none of the patients in this region with rheumatic diseases had the opportunity to benefit from rheumatology consultation for their diseases. Within a short time, Rheumatology Consultants, PLLC, became a regional center for diagnosis and management of rheumatic diseases, serving patients from Middle and East Tennessee, as well as Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia. Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Winn retired in 2015 after 36 years of serving patients with rheumatic disease. Since that time, our team has grown to five board-certified rheumatologists and two physician assistants — all dedicated to providing compassionate, state-of-the-art rheumatological care.

Fields of Expertise

Rheumatologists are experts in the management of inflammation. Inflammation may result from problems in the immune system, which regulates the body's response to infection. When the immune system is functioning abnormally, it can cause inflammation in joints resulting in arthritis. It may also cause inflammation in other body tissues.

Diseases caused by abnormal immune system inflammaton include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, Sjogren's Syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, and vasculitis. Rheumatologists manage these conditions with medications that treat the abnormal immune system activity driving the disease. In recent years, exciting new medications that target immune system abnormalities have become available, dramatically changing our impact on these diseases.
